OU Softball Sweeps Kansas; Extends Win Streak to 16

The Oklahoma softball team completed a series sweep of the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday. Let’s talk about it.

In the first game of the series, Kelly Maxwell threw an absolute gem. She struck out nine Kansas batters, and had a no-hitter into the seventh inning. The first hit off Maxwell was a solo home run. Maxwell earned her 10th win of the season.

The Oklahoma bats were red hot to start the game against the Jayhawks. The Sooners hit home runs in each of the first three innings, as well as scoring all their runs in the first three frames.

Tiare Jennings got the offense rolling for the Sooners with a two-run shot to open the scoring. Cydney Sanders also went deep with a two-run home run in the second inning. Kasidi Pickering drove in a run on an RBI single to give OU the lead 5-0 through two innings.

Jayda Coleman got on base three times and scored a run. Alynah Torres would close the scoring for the Sooners with a solo home run in the third inning.

In the second game, an Oklahoma run rule would come into play. In the first two innings alone, OU scored 10 runs.

Jayda Coleman left the yard twice and reached base safely in all five of her at bats. She is now 10th all time in hits in the Oklahoma softball record books.

In the second inning, the long ball was not a factor, and some small ball was being executed very well. OU strung together four singles, and four walks, as well as a Kansas error allowed the Sooners to put a seven spot on the board.

Tiare Jennings and Alyssa Brito were also swinging hot bats for OU, both hitting home runs, and scoring four runs each. Riley Ludlam went 2-for-2 from the plate, with a run scored, and an RBI.

Hannah Coor got in on the scoring parade with an RBI from a Kansas error, and Quincee Lilio singled up the middle for an RBI to complete the run rule.

Nicole May shut down Kansas completely. She threw a total of 32 pitches, and retired 10 of 11 batters. That is just pure dominance. She improved to 11-0 on the year.

The Sooners completed the series sweep of Kansas in the third game on Saturday.

The seniors for OU came to play in the series finale. Tiare Jennings opened the scoring in the first inning with a two-run home run. Alyssa Brito once again hit back-to-back home runs, to extend the OU lead to 3-0. Jayda Coleman continued her fantastic series against Kansas with a solo home run in the second inning to extend the lead to 4-0.

Brito and Kinzie Hansen added to the Sooner scoring with a pair of RBI singles in the fourth.

Kierston Deal got the start, and threw 2.1 scoreless innings, and allowed one walk. Karlie Keeney got the win in the final game, after she threw 2.2 innings of shutout ball, with two strikeouts.

Kansas was able to score one run in the sixth inning, and push two runs across in the final frame.

The Sooners outscored the Jayhawks throughout the series 30-4.

Next up for OU is a series with the No. 2 ranked Texas Longhorns in Austin. The first game is on Friday April 5 at 5:30 p.m.
