OU Softball Sweeps Kansas; Extends Win Streak to 16
The Oklahoma softball team completed a series sweep of the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday. Let’s talk about it. In the first game of the series,
The Oklahoma Sooners softball team lost to Louisiana, 7-5 in eight innings on Sunday afternoon. Let’s talk about it.
The Ragin’ Cajuns got on the board first in the top of the second inning after a solo home run that was hit deep to left field from senior Jourdyn Campbell.
Kelly Maxwell did a good job of bouncing back in the third inning when she took the mound. She got herself into some trouble but worked her way out of it. In the bottom of the third, OU had two runners on base but could not cash in on the opportunity.
In the fourth inning, things began to slip for the Sooners. After a lead-off single by Alexa Langeliers, she advanced to third after stealing second and an overthrow into center field by Kinzie Hansen. Luckily for OU, Jayda Coleman was able to throw her out at third base. After a walk and a single, Louisiana had runners on the corners. Cecilia Vasquez made sure to capitalize on the RBI chance, as she found a hole on the left side of the field to extend the Louisiana lead to 2-0. The damage for the Ragin’ Cajuns was not done there. OU graduate Karlie Keeney came on in relief of Maxwell, and walked the first two batters she faced, including a walk with the bases loaded to add to the Louisiana score.
Like any great team, OU was able to fight back in the bottom half of the inning. After a leadoff single by Riley Ludlam, Kinzie Hansen roped a two-run home run to right center field. That blast got some life back into the crowd. The Sooners trailed 3-2 after four innings.
Both teams exchanged zeros on the board until the seventh inning. Louisiana was able to plate another run after an error at home plate by Kinzie Hansen. OU would need a late-inning rally to win.
With the Sooners down to their last out in the bottom of the seventh inning, senior Tiare Jennings hit an RBI single to right center field. Riley Ludlam was able to drive in the game-tying run after a bloop single found a patch of grass in right field. OU would have to break in the new field with an extra-inning win to keep the win streak alive.
Louisiana could not have gotten off to a better start in extra innings. A single, an error by third baseman Alyssa Brito, and another single lined back to Keeney got it started. The Ragin’ Cajuns had the bases loaded and nobody out. An infield single by Samantha Graeter scored another run for Louisiana. With two outs, Sam Roe was able to squeak a grounder past the glove of Jennings, to score two more runs.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, Cydney Sanders was able to get a run back with a solo home run, but it would not be enough for OU to mount a comeback.
A big storyline from this game was the sloppy defense. OU had three errors in big spots of the game. The defense will have to be better for Patty Gasso for the rest of the season.
The Sooners will look to bounce back after having their win streak snapped against Texas A&M Commerce at Love’s Field on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
