Taking a look at the Sooners transfer portal action so far

With the transfer portal being open for 9 days now, it has been pretty clear that the Sooners are using the portal to fill empty holes and bring in much-needed depth. The transfer portal can be crazy to keep up with at times. We will get you updated with all of the Sooners transfer portal action up to this point. So let’s start with who the Sooners are bringing in via the portal, starting with a very familiar face.

Austin Stogner

The Sooners picked up a commitment from former TE Austin Stogner. Stogner transferred from Oklahoma to South Carolina last year. Last season at South Carolina, Stogner posted 20 receptions for 210 yards and 1 touchdown. In 2021 at Oklahoma, Stogner had 14 receptions for 166 yards and 3 touchdowns. Stogner was also battling injuries during the 2021 season. In 2020, he had 26 receptions for 422 yards and 3 touchdowns. This is a huge get for the Sooners after losing star TE Brayden Willis and TE Daniel Parker. A transfer portal TE was arguably one of the biggest needs for the Sooners as all they have returning is Sophomore Jason Llewelyn and Sophomore Kaden Helms. At 6’5″ Stogner will be a big target for the Sooners. I think Stogner fits about as well as anyone in this Sooners offense at tight end.

Dasan McCullough

The Sooners arguably picked up the best transfer on the defensive side of the ball available in Dasan McCullough. McCullough is a Freshman All-American transferring from Indiana. McCullough is a very versatile athlete who played Linebacker for the Hoosiers and played safety in high school. At 6’5″ and 230 lbs, with great versatility, you have to think McCullough would be a great fit at Cheetah in this defense. At Indiana, he had 48 tackles and 4 sacks. With DaShaun White out of eligibility, Dasan McCullough can come in and be the Cheetah for the foreseeable future. This will also further deepen the Linebacker position, which was played by only 2 guys for a good percentage of snaps this past season. This is an amazing get for Brent Venables and the staff. McCullough will have 3 years of eligibility left.

Jacob Lacey

The Sooners added Notre Dame DT transfer Jacob Lacey. In his 4 years at Notre Dame, Lacey had 35 tackles and 2.5 sacks. The Sooners have an obvious need for defensive linemen and more specifically defensive tackles. Lacey can come in and be another body at tackle for the Sooners and potentially put up solid numbers for the Sooners. Lacey could be a very solid transfer portal pickup for the Sooners.

The Sooners have sent out many offers so far, a large amount of those offers going to wide receivers. Some known WR offers are; Tre Harris from LA Tech, Dante Cephus from Kent State, Xavier Guillory the Idaho State transfer, Dorian Singer from Arizona, and Rara Thomas from Mississippi State. The Sooners have also been looking to bring in some offensive linemen. They have offered Jeremiah Byers from UTEP and Dillon Wade from Tulsa.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Sooners have offered DL Braden Fiske from Western Michigan, DL Caleb Banks from Lousiville who recently committed to Florida, and DB Khyree Jackson from Alabama. The Sooners have interest in a large number of other players, including former Oklahoma State DE Trace Ford. The offers listed above are just offers that are publicly confirmed.

Sooners star safety Billy Bowman had this to say in a player’s lounge interview, “Some of those people who are in the portal you know it may be a good thing that they entered the portal, get all the toxicity out of the locker room which is not the case for everyone but is the case for some people and then the other people you know maybe it’s just not going there way or stuff like that so I mean really it is what it is its all a personal preference you know I feel like I’m at a great spot I can’t complain so you just continue to find a way to improve better with the people that you have here that chose to stay here or chose to come here we all we have so why not do it with whoever chooses to stay“.
