Sooners Successful Weekend Dampened By Loss

Game one recap can be found here: https://sooners360.com/sooners-route-spartans-9-0/

Game 2: Brito, Bahl Lead As Sooners Romp 22-0

Alyssa Brito must have eaten her Wheaties (yes, I know I’m dating myself) for breakfast yesterday. The Sooners 3rd baseman went 3 for 3 with a HR, triple, and 4 RBI’s.  Jordy Bahl quieted any concerns that she had lost a step after her injury last year. She pitched 4 innings with 9 strikeouts with only 2 hits and one walk. Bahl looked hungry in the circle and it’s good to see the Sooners hurler back in form.

Jayda Coleman lead off the game with a walk, stole 2nd and 3rd before scoring on a sac fly from Tiara Jennings. The Sooners go as Coleman goes, getting on base and making noise on the basepaths spells good things for this lineup. Sophia Nugent and Jocelyn Erickson both hit the 2nd home run of their careers and did it in back to back style. Nugent’s was a 3 run blast and Erickson followed with the solo shot. Kiersten Deal came in to finish the game in the 5th. She had 2 strikeouts while not allowing a hit.

Game 3: Storako and Erickson Shine

Alex Storako stepped into the circle and did what she does best, outclassed the competition. She pitched 4 innings and racked up 8 strikeouts, no walks and only allowing one hit. I may be burying the lead a bit here but the Sooners offensive explosion overshadowed a great performance by Storako. The Sooners busted out the bats with a 22 run performance. It is difficult to highlight just one or two performances but nearly the entire lineup got in on the fun. Freshman Jocelyn Erickson mashed her 3rd HR of the season while going 5 for 5. Alyssa Brito continued her streak of only hitting extra base hits with a double. Tiare Jennings and Rylie Boone were the only Sooners not to record a hit but both showed signs of breaking through with either good at bats or hard hit balls just right at fielders.

Game 4: Nicole May Strikes Again

May was absolutely dominant, striking out 10 of 13 batters faced. She only walked one or she would have faced the minimum. Jordy Bahl came in and closed out the 5th and completed the combined no hitter. The Sooners scored 9 runs in support of the fantastic pitching. Jocelyn Erickson went 1 for 2 with her 4th HR of the season and giving her 11 RBI’s on the day! Tiara Jennings finally broke through and hit her first HR of the season after hitting some balls hard all day. She attacked the first pitch and launched it over the left field wall. Alyssa Brito stayed hot with two doubles still having only hit extra base hits this season.

Game 5: Sooners Fall Short 4-3

The Sooners fell victim to the Baylor Bears for their first loss of the season. The Sooners fought til the end and nearly came back to tie it but ultimately fell short. Oklahoma jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning. Baylor tied it on an RBI single by Amber Toven and took the lead on a 3 run HR by Shaylon Govan. Jordy Bahl took the loss in the circle but really didn’t pitch poorly. After giving up the HR she shut the Bears down and gave the Sooners a chance to make the comeback. If history tells us anything there isn’t much to worry about. They have a mantra of not letting a team beat them twice. It bears remembering the Sooners are still without All American Kenzie Hanson (we hope to see her in some capacity at Mary Nutter). There is something to be said about having the relief of not worrying about the pressure of having an undefeated season. Losses can wake up a team, we will see how this team responds.

The Sooners fly out to the Mary Nutter Classic this weekend. They face Cal State Fullerton and Texas A&M on Friday. The Mary Nutter will be broadcast on Flosoftball.
