Six Sooners Lead the Way to the Super Bowl

The University of Oklahoma (OU) leads all universities with an NCAA-high six former Sooners competing this Sunday in Super Bowl LVII between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.

Headlining the pack is none other than Philadelphia Quarterback and MVP Finalist, Jalen Hurts. Hurts played at Oklahoma for only one season, but the former Sooner was quickly a fan-favorite as the Alabama-transfer led the Sooners to a 12-2 season where they won the Big 12 Championship and made the College Football Playoffs. He also was second in the Heisman Trophy Race.

Also in Philadelphia is former-Sooners offensive lineman Lane Johnson, who was selected fourth overall in the NFL Draft and also named to the 2022-2023 NFL All-Pro Team. When asked about the University of Oklahoma’s role in his career, Johnson said,

“OU has a standard. They have a legacy of putting guys in the pros and guys having long historic careers. You know, I look at the guys ahead of me, Adrian Peterson, Trent Williams, guys like that have really represented the university well.” Johnson added, “We had a little setback this year, but I feel like we are on the rise.”

The Eagles will face an unfamiliar foe, the Kansas City Chiefs, who are led by Patrick Mahomes, the MVP front-runner.

The Chiefs have four former Sooners on their roster. Ironically, if you only counted the Kansas City players from OU, the university would still be tied for first in most players competing this weekend with the University of Florida, University of Michigan and also Mississippi State University.

The Chiefs four Sooners include two former two-time Big 12 offensive lineman of the year award winners in Orlando “Zeus” Brown and Creed Humphrey. Along with those two, the Chiefs also have long snapper James Winchester and tight end Blake Bell.

In a game where nobody knows what will happen, the only thing we can know for certain is that the Sooners will have plenty of players competing in the biggest game of the year on Sunday.
