Oklahoma ends the year 6-6 as they fall 51-48 to Texas Tech.

Complete game recap of Oklahoma vs Texas Tech. Sooners fall to 6-6.

If you would’ve asked me before this game what the most frustrating OU loss is for me as a fan I would’ve told you 2018 Georgia in the Rose Bowl or 2018 Alabama in the Orange Bowl. My answer now is 2022 Texas Tech at the hands of the incompetent Big 12 referees. Zach Schmit made the freaking field goal. The calls last night were the absolute worst, most blatant no calls against Oklahoma. I get that the Big 12 is upset that we are leaving the conference but take it out on the administration, not the team. They do not deserve to be handed a loss due to the butthurt feelings of Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark. Forget the NIL fund to get Peyton Bowen and David Hicks to Norman, start a fund for the buyout to get to the SEC next year. The Big 12 is the absolute worst conference in the country, the way they have treated Texas and Oklahoma for making a business move that pays them both significantly more money than the Big 12 ever could. It is absolutely inexcusable to not call games fairly for these 2 teams.

After Tech had a big kick return, Oklahoma got rolling early with Ethan Downs recovering a fumble on the first play of the game. Dillion Gabriel capped off the good field position on a fourth down conversion, finding Marvin Mims wide open for a 37 yard touchdown. Once Dillion Gabriel got the ball back, he marched the Sooners down the field, connecting once again with Brayden Willis for his 6th touchdown of the season. In the second quarter, an offensive pass interference call forced the Sooners to turn to Zach Schmit for 3, making the score 17-0.

The Red Raiders finally found something on the Oklahoma defense, going 75 yards on 11 plays, with defensive lineman Jaylon Hutchings finding the end zone for 6. Marvin Mims continued his big day, getting wide open for a 77 yard touchdown on the first play of the drive, giving Oklahoma a 24-6 lead, which they would blow. Texas Tech stormed back before the half with SaRodorick Thompson, and Donovan Smith scoring rushing touchdowns, as well as Trey Wolff nailing a 29 yard field goal to end the half, making the score 24-23.

After an Oklahoma turnover on downs to start the 2nd half, SaRodorick Thompson scored his 2nd touchdown of the day to give Texas Tech their first lead of the night. Theo Wease had his best game of the season, giving the Sooners the lead back on a 61 yard touchdown catch, outmuscling the Red Raiders defense for the score. Texas Tech backup quarterback scored a receiving touchdown on Oklahoma, he was wide open due to a 3-2 mismatch as the Sooners had only 2 DBs on that side of the field to Texas Tech’s 3 receivers. After an exchange of punts, Oklahoma was finally able to tie the game up at 38, with Dillion Gabriel tossing his 5th touchdown of the game to Brayden Willis. Texas Tech only needed 1:54 to take the lead back as Red Raider quarterback Tyler Shough found Jerand Bradley for a 44 yard touchdown. Dillion Gabriel responded quickly, throwing his 6th touchdown of the game to Jalil Farooq. Later on, CJ Coldon came up with a desperately needed turnover for the Sooners’ defense. The Red Raiders defense however shut down momentum forcing the Sooners to have to turn to Zach Schmit for 3, giving the Sooners a 48-45 lead with 4:04 to go. The Oklahoma defense was unable to get off the field, which allowed for Trey Wolf to kick a game tying field goal with 3 seconds left.

Jeff Lebby called a really nice trick play as OT started with Stoops completing a pass to Dillion Gabriel. Gabriel was absolutely smoked, and once again the incompetent Big 12 officials did not call the clear targeting hit on Dillion Gabriel. Tech, building off of the momentum of the dirty hit on Gabriel, stopped the Sooners 3 consecutive plays, forcing Zach Schmit to once again attempt 3 for the lead. Zach Schmit made the field goal attempt, however since the Big 12 hates Oklahoma they ruled the field goal was no good. The fact that the play was un-reviewable is absolutely ridiculous, it should be treated like any other scoring play, but the Big 12 wanted to hand Texas Tech the win on a silver platter. That left Texas Tech only needing a field goal to win it, and Trey Wolf made it for the win. Texas Tech’s garbage fan base proceeded to storm the field as they “upset” a now 6-6 Oklahoma team, stay classy Texas Tech.

This loss by no means was on the offensive players, Jeff Lebby has to get better at draining the clock before the snap. Running a play with 25+ seconds on the clock once again proved to be impossible to win with this defense. The defense was atrocious last night, but we still should’ve won. If it wasn’t due to the incompetence of the Big 12 officiating crew, we would’ve squeaked by. Michael Turk once again had another amazing performance, averaging 51 yards per punt on 3 attempts. Dillion Gabriel was lights out last night, having his best game of the year, throwing for 449 yards for 6 TDs and an interception. Marvin Mims had 5 receptions for 162 yards and 2 scores. Theo Wease showed what his ceiling can be if he gets the ball, having 3 receptions for 123 yards and a touchdown. Eric Gray was once again amazing, having 28 carries for 161 yards. Sadly I was correct that this game would be another late night shootout in Lubbock, in which the Sooners would not be able to pull out the win, however I never imagined that the officiating could be this atrocious.

Oklahoma will find out what bowl they play in next Sunday, December 4th. The current projections are showing Oklahoma playing in the Texas Bowl against a future SEC foe, possibly Arkansas.
