Baker Mayfield shines on Christmas Day

Since joining the Rams, Baker Mayfield has finally started to once again look like the Baker we all love and adore. Most of that is in part due to finally having a competent, and legitimate head coach in the NFL, reigning Super Bowl champion Sean McVay. The Rams claimed Mayfield off of waivers on the 7th. Since then, Mayfield has led the Rams to a 2-1 record, his only loss being on the road in Green Bay. The former Heisman winner has been extremely impressive for the Rams, winning his first game within 36 hours of arriving in LA.

Baker continued his success tonight in a blowout win over the Broncos, 51-14. Mayfield was lights out for the Rams, going 24-28 for 230 and 2 touchdowns. Mayfield’s success was monumental for the Rams as they did not punt in the game, which is the 2nd time that has happened under McVay. Surprisingly, Mayfield’s performance was one of the best in Rams’ history. Mayfield completed 85.6% of his passes, the highest completion percentage in a single game in franchise history. Without a surprise, this was Baker Mayfield’s career-high completion percentage.

McVay on Mayfield:

In the postgame press conference, Sean McVay had nothing but praise for Baker. As McVay was talking about the offensive success of the team today, he said “I thought Baker had great command, you know to be able to have 4 incompletions. I thought he played really quickly and I thought he saw the field outstanding.”

When asked about his expectations for Baker Mayfield, whether he has met them or not, McVay said “I think probably better, but you guys know I was always a fan of him, and I think he’s played really well. And you’ve got to think about too what he’s done to come in here and be able to play around a lot of guys too that haven’t been here and to be able to lead the charge today. Just an incredible effort. … He has been outstanding. And again I think a ton of credit goes to him.”
